Jonathon Naylor Editor QÊueen Elizabeth's former representative in Canada will help add a royal touch to local celebrations marking Her Majesty's diamond jubilee. Former governor general Ed Schreyer will be in Flin Flon on May 26 and 27 to take in some of the Royal Weekend festivities. Schreyer, who is also a former premier of Manitoba, is scheduled to attend a performance by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet as well as the Afternoon 'High' Tea. Coun. Karen MacKinnon announced Schreyer's upcoming visit at last week's city council meeting. Council voted unanimously to hold a VIP reception at City Hall for guests traveling to Flin Flon for the weekend. Unfortunately, due to his flight schedule, it appears the 76-year-old Schreyer will not be able to attend that event. Appointed by then-prime minister Pierre Trudeau, Schreyer served as Governor General of Canada from 1979 until 1984. Born in Beausejour, Man., he was also the NDP premier of his home province from 1969 until 1977. Coun. MacKinnon said her understanding is there are only 22 communities across Canada holding celebrations to mark the Queen's 60th year on the throne. 'The work that's going into this should be recognized by the city and supported by the city,' she said.
