Next month football fans get a chance to check out the Grey Cup and snap a photo with two Winnipeg Blue Bombers alumni.
On Monday, Oct. 19, former Blue Bombers Doug Brown and Brett MacNeil will escort the CFL championship trophy to Flin Flon as part of the Via Rail Northern Grey Cup Tour.
The tour, a partnership between Via Rail, Travel Manitoba, the Winnipeg Free Press and Canadian Tire Jumpstart, is intended to promote the Grey Cup and the sport of football in the lead-up to Nov. 29, when Winnipeg hosts the 103rd Grey Cup championship game.
For the Flin Flon stop, organizers including Creighton recreation director Channa Senyk and Caitlin Bailey, recreation programmer for the City of Flin Flon, are teaming up to put together what Bailey calls a “tailgate-style party.”
The Grey Cup will be set up at the Creighton soccer field from 3 to 6 pm and the event will include a free barbecue.
At 4 pm, the Creighton Kodiaks football team will be playing a scrimmage and organizing football-related games, Senyk said.
“We’re excited to have something new and different coming here,” Bailey says. “And its great to have the Cup come up to northern Manitoba.”
The Cup will also stop in The Pas, Thompson, Snow Lake and Churchill on the northern tour.
