Jonathon Naylor Editor Mayor George Fontaine is urging volunteerism as a way for residents to occupy their time and support their community. At last week's city council meeting, he made a gentle plea to citizens to look at becoming involved with a volunteer group. 'Please consider (it), if there's things that you like doing, from ski club to...festivals, Trout Festival, all those kinds of things,' said Mayor Fontaine. 'Really seriously consider it and talk about it amongst your friends.' Mayor Fontaine spoke on the need for volunteer groups to receive help from younger people. He said some aspects of Flin Flon that rely on volunteers will eventually be lost unless there is continued support for them. Speaking of volunteers, Coun. Colleen McKee took the opportunity to commend organizers of the recent Roller Goodwin hockey tournament. She called the popular event, held at the Whitney Forum, 'a display of amazing community spirit.' In an unrelated note, council voted to vary the requirements at 6 Jones Square in Channing to allow the construction of new garage. It will replace a garage that burnt down.
