Jonathon Naylor Editor Flin Flon's next MLA will in all likelihood be a Flin Flonner. The three previously named candidates for the riding's provincial NDP nomination will not face any additional challengers after the nomination deadline passed last week. The nomination will go to either college instructor Leslie Beck, union safety representative Tom Lindsay or high school teacher Clarence Pettersen. The Flin Flon NDP Riding Association will elect its candidate on March 5. Though nothing in politics is ever for certain, the NDP candidate will win the Oct. 4 election barring a seismic shift in decades-old voting patterns within the riding. If the NDP do indeed take the riding, it will mark the first time in years that a Flin Flon resident has occupied the MLA's chair. Retiring MLA Gerard Jennissen, who has been on the job since 1995, lives in Cranberry Portage. It might also be the first time since 1999 that the Flin Flon MLA will occupy the opposition benches, as polls suggest the NDP may lose the election to the Progressive Conservatives.
