It's certainly not uncommon for businesses to turn to beloved fictional characters to help draw attention to their products. Popeye has been a spokesman for spinach, Batman for Coca-Cola, Charlie Brown for life insurance, and the Pink Panther for fibreglass insulation. The list goes on and on. And the latest addition to that list is someone with whom Flin Flonners have a special connection Ñ Flintabbatey Flonatin. The Flin Flon and District Chamber of Commerce voted yesterday to allow Creighton's Pizza to use Flinty's name and likeness with the fried chicken on its menu. A rough sketch of how the character would be used was passed around the 20 people on hand for the meeting, held at the Friendship Centre restaurant. The sketch depicted Flinty standing with one arm resting on a giant drumstick, the words "Flinty's Fried Chicken" above him. Once the members reviewed the sketch, the consensus around the table was that it did not represent an inappropriate use of the fictitious professor. Here is a recap of other matters from yesterday's meeting: President Doug O'Brien noted that the "Welcome" banners purchased by the chamber last year have been repaired after sustaining some damage. O'Brien said the banners are simply too short to be strung across both ends of Main Street, as had originally been hoped. The chamber executive will now discuss what to do with the banners. Member Lois (Bunny) Burke noted that Todd Schwartz, U.S. Consul for Manitoba, has been invited to be the guest speaker at an upcoming gala to honour local volunteers this September. Schwartz spoke to the chamber last August, spending much of his time talking about a desire to help spur economic development in the province. A letter informed that the Canadian Chamber of Commerce will hold their fall meeting this September in Calgary.
