For a senior citizen, the Trout Festival is looking mighty spry.
The venerable Flin Flon celebration marks its 65th year in 2015 with an exciting lineup of events beginning Saturday.
“Just come out and have a good time with family and friends,” urges festival president Anita Bradt.
The festival’s first event will be the Trout Festival Canoe Races, which get underway Saturday at noon on Ross Lake.
Among the many other highlights are Main Street Days, which see vendors, carnival rides and entertainers line Main Street. That event will be held next Friday, July 3 and Saturday, July 4.
The 2015 Fish Fry, which overtakes the Whitney Forum next Saturday, July 4, is being touted as “the party of the year.” Headlining are The Urgez, a Winnipeg cover band that performs classic rock and other hits.
Bradt was told The Urgez play “stuff you can dance to” – and what’s a Fish Fry without dancing?
Returning to the festival are mainstays such as the Canada Day Parade and the ever-impressive midnight fireworks over Ross Lake to mark our nation’s birthday.
Coming back for the first time in years are the rubber duck races at Creekside Park next Saturday, July 4.
A number of other events coincide with the festival but are independently organized.
Among them is the Canada Day celebration taking place next Wednesday, July 1 at the Creighton ball diamond. That celebration will include various booths and some great stage entertainment.
As usual, hundreds of out-of-towners and former residents are expected to take in the various festivities.
In her first year as president, Bradt and her committee are committed to a memorable festival.
“We’re giving it our best shot,” she says.
The fact that there is still a festival at all speaks to the dedication of volunteers such as Bradt.
Last fall, the festival once again faced an uncertain future due to a shortage of executive members. That’s when Bradt stepped in as president.
Bradt is still welcoming help from volunteers. Anyone with time to spare may contact her at 204-271-0153.
