Flin Flon Citizens on Patrol Program (FFCOPP) has monitored traffic on four separate occasions since the kick-off of the SpeedCheck display sign on August 6.
Volunteers monitored 490 vehicles over six and a half hours with 100 exceeding the speed limit.
At the north end of Green Street (where most concerns are), on August 12 there were a lot more exceeding the speed limit, but also more cars.
The average over two days at this location was 26 to 27 per cent of drivers operating their vehicles over the posted speed limit.
Two other locations were monitored, one at Green Street and Willis Avenue and the other on Hwy 10A near the former armoury, and both of those revealed an average of 16 to 17 per cent of drivers exceeding the speed limit.
Some people think it is fun to see how fast they can go, so when they see the sign they speed up. One driver at Green and Willis was going 69 km/h and one at the north end of Green Street on August 12 was travelling at 83-plus km/h. Both vehicle licence plates have been recorded along with vehicle descriptions.
We may not be able to write speeding tickets, but anyone driving in excess of the posted speed limit will be recorded and reported.
Other locations requested by citizens that we will focus on include the Hapnot Collegiate area, the south end of Green Street and Channing Drive, Manitoba Avenue and Dominion Boulevard, the north end of Queen Street and the Perimeter Highway.
Drivers need to remember that in Flin Flon, the urban speed maximum is 50 km/h in ideal conditions (unless otherwise posted), in all school zones the maximum is 30 km/h in ideal conditions and on the Perimeter Highway the maximum 70 km/h in ideal conditions. Drive safely.
