A Flin Flonner has been named the new chair of University College of the North’s (UCN) governing council.

Becky Cianflone was announced as the next holder of the position March 10, taking over from outgoing chair Cam Mateika. The current general manager and executive director of Community Futures Greenstone and board member for the Flin Flon and District Chamber of Commerce, Communities Economic Development Fund/Look North and other groups began serving on the governing council for the school in 2018.

“I’m excited to continue the positive work of the board for northern learners,” Cianflone said in a UCN-issued press release.

“UCN has an important role to play in facilitating conversations and creating solutions. Post-secondary education is intrinsically tied to economic development and I’m excited to contribute my experience.”

Cianflone is one of two Flin Flon-based members of the appointed board, which is tasked to “determine the mission, vision and values of the university college”, as well as look after UCN’s finances, administration and organization and cover most responsibilities for the school. Governing council members sit for terms of up to three years for regular members - the board can consist of up to 20 members, but not more.

Cianflone has also served in different board roles with the Women’s Resource Centre, Northern Tourism Advisory Committee and other local groups and organizations.

“Becky’s appointment is positive for UCN,” said UCN president and vice-chancellor Doug Lauvstad.

“She is a champion of living and thriving in the North and she has a deep understanding of the unique role UCN plays in empowering northern residents.”

UCN operates several education and training centres throughout northern Manitoba, with two main campuses in The Pas and Thompson. The school operates the Flin Flon Regional Education and Training Centre uptown, as well as other courses through the Northern Manitoba Mining Academy.
