Get some water and find some shade - Flin Flon and surrounding areas are under a heat warning and likely will be into the weekend.

Temperatures in the low 30-degree Celsius are expected Friday and Saturday, with Humidex readings into the mid-to-high 30s and high UV index ratings each day. Overnight, temperatures are expected to drop to the low 20-degree range or into the teens.

"Heat warnings are issued when very high temperature or humidity conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion," reads the alert.

"Extreme heat affects everyone. The risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors. Watch for the effects of heat illness: swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and the worsening of some health conditions. Never leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle."

Heat warnings are in place Friday for most of southern and central Saskatchewan, as well as some areas of Manitoba near the Saskatchewan border.

In times of hot temperatures, Environment Canada has a series of recommendations to reduce effects of heat, including planning activities during cooler times of day, taking breaks in air-conditioned buildings or in the shade, taking cool showers or baths, staying out of direct sunlight when possible, wearing loose, light-coloured clothing and drinking plenty of water. Other tips include checking on family, neighbours and friends and keeping homes cool by blocking out the sun through blinds, drapes or curtains.
