The Flin Flon School Division reported a higher-than-average accident ratio in the latter half of last year, statistics show.

Data presented at Tuesday’s school board meeting shows the division recorded 29.15 accidents per 1,000 students from July 1 to December 31 of 2014.

That was 15 per cent higher than the average of all Manitoba school divisions, which stood at 24.91 accidents.

Flin Flon’s rate translated into 29 accidents, 18 of which led to injuries classified as “minor.”

Eight accidents led to moderate injuries and three produced severe injuries.

Overall, 11 accidents took place on the playground. Another six occurred during indoor physical education.

Three accidents were reported in the classroom, with another two specifically in home-economics class. One other accident occurred on the exterior premises.

The remaining six accidents took place in locations classified as “other.”

Two of the three severe accidents were on the playground.

Province-wide, school accidents were the most likely to take place on the playground (42 per cent). The next most likely situation was indoor phys-ed (23 per cent).
