Flin Flon students could be climbing aboard a historic mode of transportation.

The school board is considering whether to incorporate voyageur canoe lessons into the curriculum.

This comes at the suggestion of Wayne Elliott, a voyageur canoe enthusiast who appeared before the board on Tuesday.

“It’s a very historical piece of equipment,” he told trustees.

Elliott said voyageur canoeing is a “great way to socialize” and reenact an important part of Canadian history.

He said the activity has opened many doors for him in both Canada and the US.

Elliott said he is willing to help teach students how to use a voyageur canoe.

He added his sense that students should learn more about the significance of the voyageur canoe and David Thompson, the famed fur trader, explorer and surveyor.

Trustees thanked Elliott for his presentation and will now discuss the matter further.
