Flin Flon school board report: Copyright in the classroom

Flin Flon school trustees received a crash course on the legalities of using copyrighted material as a teaching aid.

Flin Flon school trustees received a crash course on the legalities of using copyrighted material as a teaching aid.

At their regular meeting Tuesday, they reviewed a formal document, published by three national educational organizations, on Canadian copyright law and how it applies to the classroom.

Among the tidbits: “Teachers in Canada may copy, translate, communicate electronically, show, or play any copyright-protected work for a test or examination, provided the work is not already commercially available in an appropriate medium for the purpose of a test or examination.”

Also: “Any original work created by a student – be it in the form of an essay, a video or DVD, a sound recording, Web site, or art work – is protected [by copyright].”

Kudos

Speaking on behalf of the board, Trustee Murray Skeavington congratulated Flin Flon students who participated in last week’s Red River Heritage Fair in Winnipeg.

He read out the names of the students who won awards: Sarah Faktor and Brooklynn Morin (Technology Award), Isabel Plamondon and Andy Richard (Young Citizen Award), Michael Ward (World War II Award) and Isabel Plamondon (Award of Excellence).

Skeavington noted the students were also interviewed on CTV’s Winnipeg morning show.

He added that Flin Flon is the only division outside of Winnipeg to send students to the Heritage Fair, which invites students to submit projects on Canadian history.

Skeavington also wished good luck to Flin Flon students Chloe Reitlo and Madison McIntyre as they head to Montreal next week to compete in the Canada-Wide Science Fair.

Contracts

Trustees approved contracts with four teachers: James McGraw (full-time, Sept. 6, 2016 to June 30, 2017), Lisa Baker (full-time, Sept. 6, 2016 to Dec. 22, 2016 or until the regular teacher is able to return), Trevor Sytnick (full-time, Sept. 6, 2016 to June 30, 2017) and Shonda Beauchamp (half-time, Sept. 6, 2016 to June 30, 2017 or until the regular teacher is able to return).
