A new pilot project is giving Flin Flonners the opportunity to have curbside recycling pickups once a week rather than every second week.
Flin Flon Recycling Centre administrator Deb Odegaard says complaints of residents missing their pick-up date inspired the six-month trial.
“If it goes [well] for these six months, we’ll keep it up,” said Odegaard. “But if not then we may even just reduce it to people who register for pick-up.”
Flin Flonners who want the service purchase special red bags and have the option to place two additional bags as well as cardboard for pick up on Wednesdays.
Currently, drivers from the Recycling Centre drive through Flin Flon to spot the red bags placed on doorsteps and curbs.
If the pilot project does not work, Odegaard says, residents will have to preregister for pick up.
“That way we don’t have to drive throughout the whole city,” she said.
Red bags are available for purchase at nine different locations in Flin Flon for $3.50, which covers the cost of pick-up.
“And that’s the joy of the red bags – no one has to register,” Odegaard said. “We drive around and if there is a red bag…then we pick it up. We know you’ve paid because you have to buy the red bag.”
Red bags can be purchased at Candy Bar, Super K, Gas Bar, Acklands-Grainger, the Recycling Centre, Pharmasave, Your Dollar Store With More, Flin Flon City Hall, North of 53 Consumers Co-op and Eddie’s Family Foods.
Area residents also have the option of dropping off recyclables to 9 Timber Lane or using the free trailer at the Flintoba Shopping Centre.
In Creighton, the town provides weekly recycling pick-ups at no charge.
