Flin Flon’s provincial electoral map may soon change.

The Manitoba Electoral Divisions Boundaries Commission is now reviewing the province’s electoral boundaries. The commission reviews boundaries every 10 years, using the most recent census data to either keep or change the province’s constituencies.

As an electoral district, Flin Flon is currently far below the provincial population standard. According to the Commission’s website, the Flin Flon district currently has a population of 15,695, 30 per cent lower than the minimum threshold of around 22,300.

Northern Manitoba is split into four provincial electoral districts, including Thompson, The Pas and Kewatinook, which includes Churchill and most of northeastern Manitoba. Each of the four districts is currently below the provincial population minimum, with The Pas’ 22,145 people coming the closest to meeting the standard.

The findings could lead to a redrawing of the province’s electoral map, potentially leading to district changes or amalgamation. The boundary commission’s results will be released in June.

Currently, the Flin Flon provincial district stretches from Cranberry Portage all the way north to the Manitoba/Nunavut border.
