Two Flin Flon sisters are hoping the CancerCare Manitoba analogue mammography van will soon be making its final tours.
It’s one of the only analogue screening vans left in Canada, and Paulette Wotton and Lisa Rogers hope to raise enough money through the upcoming Breast Cancer Pledge Ride North to upgrade the van to digital screening.
The van was originally purchased through the southern Manitoba Pledge Ride more than 10 years ago, and the sisters hope to share the cost of the upgraded van with the southern ride this year.
Flin Flon riders have helped raise $40,000 over the past two years through the Pledge Ride North run with Wotton and Rogers hoping to contribute another $20,000 to CancerCare Manitoba this year.
“We want to be able to give back and help women,” said Wotton. “Every kind of cancer is tragic, but we can combine the love of riding and giving back to helping women.”
This marks the third year for the Pledge Ride North with an average of $20,000 each year so far.
“The first year we were blown away,” said Wotton. “And then it gets into your stream that you can match that.”
Rogers said she was equally as surprised the following year when another $20,000 was collected.
“It was just as nice of a surprise to be in that ball park the next year,” she said.
This year’s event will be held on Sunday, August 2 with a ride and poker run out to Gyles Campground and a social to follow at the Rotary Wheel in Flin Flon.
Registration will be held at the Gateway from 9 am to 10:30 am with riders expected to leave for Gyles Campground at 11 am.
Riders are required to pledge a minimum of $40 each, which will also cover their admission to the social that evening. Non-riders are encouraged to attend the social with a $10 cover charge at the door.
Riders will participate in a poker run on their way back from Gyles to Flin Flon with stops along the way for cards. Ghost hands will be available at the registration table for $5 in the Gateway parking lot.
Wotton and Rogers have also been selling raffle tickets for a 2015 Indian Chief Vintage motorcycle, which will be drawn around 10:30 pm on Sunday, August 2 at Rotary Wheel with proceeds going to CancerCare Manitoba.
The Relay for Life team Once Upon A Cure will sell 50/50 tickets with proceeds going to the Relay for Life in September.
The Usual Suspects and The Mix will provide entertainment at the Rotary Wheel starting at 7 pm.
