Flin Flon city council has approved its 2015 budget, but question marks surround the largest capital expenditure.
Mayor Cal Huntley said council held a special meeting last month to pass final reading of the budget.
“The tax notices were quite in arrears because we had to wait so long for the judgment,” said Huntley, referring to regulatory approval of the city’s special services levy.
Had regulators rejected the levy, designed to more evenly distribute the property tax burden, the budget would have required an overhaul.
The city anticipated tax notices would be sent to home and business owners this week or next.
The budget aims to trim spending by $75,100 over 2014 while holding taxes level, save for a $50 increase to the levy.
The largest capital expenditure in the budget is $2.6 million to purchase the Northern Bus Lines garage and convert it into the new city public works shop.
But last month came a consultant’s study that determined taxpayers would save $430,000 if the city upgrades the current public works site instead of buying the garage.
Speaking at Tuesday’s council meeting, Huntley said the city is “pretty sure [of] the direction” it will take but he declined to comment until the city hears from Northern Bus Lines.
