Flin Flonners have their chance to elect the community’s next mayor and council today.

Cities, towns, villages and rural municipalities across Manitoba will cast ballots Oct. 26 in local elections. In Flin Flon, voting will take place from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. at City Hall. All 11 polls for the election will be hosted in the main council chambers of the building, located at 20 First Avenue. An advance poll took place at City Hall last week.

Voters will be able to select one of three mayoral candidates (Tim Babcock, Leslie Beck and George Fontaine) and up to six candidates for Flin Flon city council (Alison Dallas-Funk, Judy Eagle, Vair Ellison, Bill Hanson, Ted Highfield, Steve Lytwyn, Heather Richardson, Roger Siemens and Mike Slipp are the candidates).

The Reminder will have full election coverage on thereminder.ca on election night, on our social media channels and in our next paper, which will be published Nov. 2.

The Reminder sent questionnaires about several local issues to all candidates. Responses from mayoral candidates can be found at this link, while responses from council candidates can be found here.

No election will be held for the Flin Flon School Division board of trustees - five candidates, Tim Davis, Leslie Fernandes, Jackie Hucaluk, Coralie Jays and Angela Simpson, applied to run for the seven-person board and will be acclaimed, while the two remaining spots will be filled by appointment.

All voters may need to show identification in order to cast a ballot - one piece of government-issued photo ID, like a driver's licence or passport, or two official documents to confirm proof of identity will fit the City's parameters.

There are other ways to cast ballots for people unable to get to City Hall on election day. For voters who are hospitalized or who live in seniors' homes or long-term care homes, mobile voting stations will be at Flin Flon General Hospital, Rotary Court, Legion Housing on Main Street and at Hemlock Housing on Hemlock Street on Oct. 26.

Northern regions

Along with the Flin Flon vote, there will be several elections in communities across northern Manitoba.

Snow Lake will see Ron Scott and Kim Stephen each running for mayor, along with a long list of council candidates, including Jeremy Campbell, Shelley Chrapun, Randy Cockle, Cole Dunbar, Greg Erickson, Bryson Foy, Dave Mayer, Kirk Melnick, Sharon Meuse, Bill Pleasance, Chris Samborski, Jason Samborski, Tyler Samborski and Lars Stoltz.

The RM of Kelsey will hold votes for a reeve and councillors for three of the RM's six wards. Four candidates have stepped forward to run for reeve - Tim Atchison, current Ward 4 councillor Jim Berscheid, Margaret Commodore and Ward 2 councillor Neil Scott.

Three of the RM’s six ward seats will be up for a vote, including Ward 6, which covers part of Cranberry Portage. That seat will be contested by Gord Fidierchuk and Keith Jaeger.

Three ward representatives have got on council by acclamation - Joe Cote for Ward 1, which covers the Ralls Island area near The Pas, Davide Novo for Ward 3, which covers the Carrot Valley south of The Pas, and Tiffany Anderson for Ward 5, one of two seats covering Cranberry Portage.

The Pas has two candidates coming forward to replace outgoing mayor Herb Jaques - Jennifer Cook and Andre Murphy are both in the running. For the town’s council seats, nine people - Trent Allen, Carrie Atkinson, Larry Forster, Gary Hopper, Trevor Lane, Randy Manych, Jim Scott, Sandra Shapiro and Bill Ward - are running. Atkinson, Forster, Lane and Ward are all incumbents.
