Flin Flon native with cerebral palsy blinks his way to debut novel

Ambitious Flin Flon native Ryan Nelson isn’t letting his cerebral palsy stop him from realizing his dream of becoming an author.

Ambitious Flin Flon native Ryan Nelson isn’t letting his cerebral palsy stop him from realizing his dream of becoming an author.

The Brandon Sun reports that Nelson, 25, is writing his first novel, The Crusades of Captain Rye and His Renegades, with the help of a support worker.

Nelson is physically unable to move or speak. As the Sun notes, he writes by blinking his eyes when his support worker points to the right letter on a letter board.

“The fantasy novel’s main character is the head pirate on a ship and is based on Nelson,” notes the Sun. “His crew is called the Renegades and characters are loosely based on friends, family and other people in his life.”

Nelson was born and raised in Flin Flon, moving to Brandon two years ago so he could access more resources.

His mother, Kim Nelson, who lives in Flin Flon, told the Sun that she is thrilled to see her son thrive while working on the book.
