Our community has fallen far behind The Pas in a friendly reading challenge, but staff at the Flin Flon-Creighton Public Library remain optimistic there will be a turnaround. As of yesterday, Flin Flon trailed The Pas by 636 books, magazines and videos checked out during the May-long "Battle of the Books." "There's a little bit of a gap there, so we're encouraging all to come out and help so at least we're not too far behind," administrative assistant Robin Galbraith said lightheartedly. Galbraith echoed a familiar sentiment when she called Flin Flon "a last minute town," adding that the book battle is far from over. The last day for people to stop in and check out books, magazines, videos, and books on tape and CD, will be tomorrow. As of yesterday, The Pas Library had lent out 6,030 items compared to the 5,394 at the local library. A customer appreciation day will be held at the winning library on June 18, with staff from the losing library on hand to prepare and serve hot dogs, soda, and cake. The Flin Flon staff want to make sure they're not the ones donning the aprons and encourage residents to stop by and find a good read. Since May is also ParticipACTION Month, they ask people not only to exercise their minds by reading but also their bodies by walking, jogging or riding their bikes to the library.
