The turn of a new year has area mayors hoping for continued relationships from years past for Flin Flon, Creighton and Denare Beach.
Mayor Cal Huntley made his way back into civil politics just before 2014 came to an end and has high hopes for not only Flin Flon, but the community as a whole.
“2014 was definitely a transition phase getting back into civil politics,” Huntley said, “And I feel proud to take that leadership role.”
Huntley’s campaign platform focused on the relationships between Flin Flon, Creighton and Denare Beach and he hopes those relationships continue to be strong in 2015.
“I believe we’re part of a region where we have to participate as partners…and that’s what we’re going to work towards,” said Huntley. He said he’s already met with Mayor Bruce Fidler in Creighton and Mayor Carl Lentowicz of Denare Beach, “and we see a positive move forward.”
“I just want to continue working with the communities and come up with some projects and continue to build the relationship between the three of us,” said Fidler.
The New Year will have plenty on the books for Flin Flon as Huntley looked back at the changes made in 2014.
“We had big announcements from Hudbay and Callinex Mines Inc.,” said Flin Flon’s mayor. “It’s going to be a change of atmosphere and more chance for opportunity.”
Denare Beach’s Lentowicz hopes to continue with the community’s success in 2014 and carry it through for another 12 months.
“I’d like to retain what we have and advance with some more paving,” he said.
The community received new pavement in a number of locations and he hopes to see it finished this year.
Aside from road construction, Lentowicz hopes to continue to build the relationship between the three communities.
“I think we’ll be having some inner community meetings with the other two councils…and that will be good for the area.”
Though there wasn’t a confirmed date for those meetings to start, Lentowicz expected they would begin early into this year.
As Huntley looks into 2015 he sees positive changes.
“Generally speaking, I see a more positive direction moving forward,” he said. “It’s going to be a busy year, there’s no doubt about that.”
