Flin Flon City Council set fines associated with its recently passed smoking bylaw during the regular meeting of council on Nov. 21.

The amendment, which passed on first reading, will see any person who commits an offence against the smoking bylaw pay $50 on the first offence, $100 on the second, $200 on the third, and $500 for any further offences.

The smoking bylaw, which was passed on Oct. 3, prohibits people from smoking within five meters of any public entrance in Flin Flon, including businesses, service facilities and recreation facilities.

Work billing

A new amendment to a bylaw that governs the operation of the water and sewer system in the City of Flin Flon clarifies who is responsible for work done by the City.

The amendment, which passed on first reading at the Nov. 21 meeting of regular council, clarifies that property owners are responsible for all work done by City crews or equipment to repair, replace, or maintain private lines on private property. Property owners are responsible for any work done on their property up to the property line.

When work is immediately required on a private line in order to preserve the system from a freeze up or other harm, or if work is required to avoid damage to an adjoining property, the City may authorize this work if it makes reasonable effort to contact the property owner and advise them that they may potentially be charged. If the City is unable to contact the owner prior the beginning the work, the property owner will still be billed. In this case, a written notice will be delivered to the property owner at the property in question.
