Flin Flon city council reviews Main Street snow removal

Faster sidewalk snow-clearing sought
Snow Removal?
Snow has accumulated in front of the vacant former Hong Kong Restaurant, among other Main Street buildings.

Flin Flon city council will review how Main Street sidewalks are kept navigable after fielding concerns over inadequate snow removal.

Local businessman Randy Daneliuk told council last week that the snow in front of Main Street properties is not being cleared away after every snowfall.

“The last few years, [some] places haven’t been cleaned very good,” he said during council’s post-meeting question period on Nov. 18.

Daneliuk said improper snow removal is a concern in front of private properties as well as those owned by the city.

He told council that when he owned The Reminder on Main Street years ago, he had to get the snow promptly removed or watch the city do it for him – and charge him $300.

“So I’d make sure my guy was there to clean it because it wasn’t $300 a day to do it,” Daneliuk said.

Mayor Cal Huntley said he thinks the city still has the same authority to make certain the snow is cleared.

“We’ll just have to look at how we’ve been applying it, so I can’t answer you right now,” he told Daneliuk. “But I mean, the obligation is with the property owner or the business owner, and if they don’t [clear the snow], then we have options.”

Added the newly minted mayor lightheartedly: “But how we’re implementing them right now, I can claim I’m too new to answer that one.”

Daneliuk wasn’t the only one with concerns around snow on Flin Flon’s busiest sidewalks.

Coun. Leslie Beck told council she recently saw a couple of people fall on a sidewalk due to the accumulation of a snow ridge where work was being performed near a fire hydrant.
