A downtown resident is renewing safety concerns over pedestrian options on Hapnot Street.
Dennis Hydamaka appeared before city council last week to remind them that there is no walkway at the corner of Hapnot Street and Fifth Avenue.
He said he was told up to two years ago that a walkway was planned, but Mayor Cal Huntley said council would need to confirm that before getting back to him with an update.
Hydamaka has previously shared his fear that a vehicle may one day fatally strike a pedestrian at the corner.
While addressing council last week, Hydamaka once again mentioned concerns over the wooden sewer box structure that doubles as a sidewalk in front of 2 to 9 Hapnot Street.
“It is rotten,” he said. “The bottom is falling out and it is a sidewalk that is being used. The handrail is rotten and part of it has fallen off. It should be condemned.”
Hydamaka said a senior woman and children are among those who use the sidewalk.
Huntley told Hydamaka council would have a look at the situation.
