Local celebrities will be sharing the love of reading at the Flin Flon Public Library next Wednesday, Jan. 27 at the Seusstastic Reading Rally, held in honour of National Family Literacy Day.
Guest readers will include Flin Flon Junior Bombers, local firefighters and RCMP officers, and Flin Flon Mayor Cal Huntley.
The event’s name refers to beloved children’s author, Dr. Seuss, whose books include The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham and Oh, The Places You’ll Go!. Children who attend the reading rally will be able to make a Cat in the Hat craft and play Dr. Seuss-themed games.
Family Literacy Day is a national awareness initiative created by ABC Life Literacy Canada in 1999 to highlight the importance of reading together as a family.
According to ABC Life Literacy, taking time every day to read or do a learning activity with children is crucial to a child’s development, and even 15 minutes of reading a day can have a dramatic impact on a child’s literacy skills.
The Seusstastic Reading Rally is organized by the Read to Me program and the library. The free event will be open to the public from 1 to 5:30 pm.
