Flin Flon budget hinges on levy approval

Flin Flon city council passed first reading of its 2015 budget last week, but the plan won’t become law unless council’s special services levy (SSL) is renewed.

Flin Flon city council passed first reading of its 2015 budget last week, but the plan won’t become law unless council’s special services levy (SSL) is renewed.

The budget aims to trim spending by $75,100 over 2014 while holding taxes level, save for a $50 increase to the SSL.

But the budget is structured on the hope that the SSL, designed to raise taxes on low-end homes, receives a four-year renewal from provincial regulators.

If approval is denied, neither budget expenditures nor revenues would be expected to change, but the mill rate would rise to compensate.

If SSL approval is granted, the budget is expected to pass final reading at a future council meeting. Council hoped to learn the fate of the SSL by mid-June.

Council’s largest planned capital expenditure is $2.6 million to purchase the Northern Bus Lines garage and transform it into the new city public works shop.
