Jonathon Naylor Editor The bright orange flicker of candles illuminated local cemeteries Sunday as residents remembered dearly departed loved ones. Encased in star-shaped ice sculptures, hundreds of graveside Memory Candles were lit by volunteers from the Anglican Parish of St. Peter and St. James. 'I think it brings the community together, and from every faith,' said organizer Jean Hyska. The church sold the Memory Candles to families for $10 each, but the initiative is about the community, not money. Church volunteers lit candles at all cemeteries in Flin Flon and Denare Beach, as well as the children's cemetery on South Hudson Street, last Sunday afternoon, Nov. 25. This was the seventh year the church organized the fundraiser, and Hyska said the response was better than ever. Families purchased nearly 800 graveside candles. About another 300 were placed along the driveways of the cemeteries and given to residents of local care homes. While the original candles have long since burnt out, Hyska hopes residents will bring their own candles to light throughout the winter and holiday season.
