Kelly Carrington Staff Writer Bubbles of all shapes and sizes took over the sky at World Bubble Day as the Flin Flon Neigh-bourhood Revitalization Corporation (FFNRC) held the inaugural event at the Flin Flon Station Museum. Held in partnership with Flinty's Birthday on Sunday afternoon, roughly 200 people participated in the bubble games and activities. Laurence Gillespie, executive director of FFNRC, said the common interest in bubbles was the perfect inspiration for a community event. "Bubbles appeal to everyone," he said. Bubble machines, blowers and wands scattered tables at World Bubble Day as visitors were encouraged to try the fun tools. The FFNRC is mandated to organize a community event once a year. "In the past we haven't done that, so we wanted to have a splashy event this year," said Gillespie. Reaching out With the intention of reaching out to all residents, the FFNRC held the free event as part of Flinty's Birthday, to help attract more interest. With no set goal for attendance, Gillespie says he was pleased with the turnout, though they certainly had enough supplies to accommodate another few hundred people. The FFNRC spent roughly $1,800 on World Bubble Day, which included five bubble machines. "We looked into getting a permanent supply of machines (so) they could be used at other events in Flin Flon," said Gillespie. Making a special appearance, all the way from Ontario, was Mighty Bubble, the superhero who encourages kids to regularly and properly wash their hands. Since health initiatives are another mandate of the FFNRC, Gillespie said the appearance of Mighty Bubble was fitting. "It was a helpful tie-in," he said. World Bubble Day was a first for Flin Flon, though the FFNRC hopes to see it return in future years.
