OmniTrax has accepted a letter of intent from a group of First Nations interested in purchasing the Port of Churchill and the Hudson Bay Rail line, reports the Canadian Press.
The rail company said there would be a 45-day period of due diligence before a sale could conclude, and the two upper levels of government will be asked to support the group vying for the purchase, according to the news agency.
OmniTrax president Merv Tweed told CBC the First Nations consist of “a group of communities along the line and others that, you know, over the period of time have always believed the railway was theirs. This now can become a reality based on current negotiations.”
Tweed also told CBC that OmniTrax has always faced challenges related to its northern Manitoba operations.
The rail company announced in early December that it was putting the Port of Churchill and accompanying Hudson Bay Rail line up for sale.
