Fires force evacuation of Easterville, Chemawawin

An evacuation of up to 2,000 people from the neighbouring communities of Easterville and Chemawawin First Nation began last Thursday, June 23 after three fires drew to within a kilometre of the area.

An evacuation of up to 2,000 people from the neighbouring communities of Easterville and Chemawawin First Nation began last Thursday, June 23 after three fires drew to within a kilometre of the area.

About 70 people from Easterville were being evacuated to The Pas and up to 2,000 from Chemawawin First Nation were being evacuated to Winnipeg.

The Canadian Red Cross had a team of volunteers in the area, located 340 road km southeast of Flin Flon.

The state of emergency in the area was expected to be lifted Monday afternoon, CBC reported.
