Thirteen calls made May one of the busiest months in some time for Flin Flon firefighters, city council learned Tuesday. Council reviewed the latest monthly fire chief's report, which detailed each incident: May 4, 3:10 PM: A caller said children were lighting fires at Rotary Park. Upon arrival, firefighters found a small fire that had already been extinguished. The on-call officer and 13 firefighters responded. May 6, 2:34 PM: A caller said there was a bush fire off of Channing Drive by the city yard. Upon arrival, firefighters determined there were three large bush fires in three separate locations. Two of the fires were located on either side of Channing Drive and the third behind the Trailer Court. The RCMP were called in to investigate as this was a suspicious fire. The HudBay Fire Department was called in mutual aid and assisted the fire by the Trailer Court. The fire chief and firefighters responded. May 8, 2:21 AM: A caller said a fire alarm was received from a residence on Tweedsmuir Street. Upon arrival, firefighters found the resident of the home asleep with a pot left on the stove that had burnt, causing smoke. The RCMP were also the scene. The on-call officer and eight firefighters responded. May 10, 11:50 AM: A caller said a fire alarm wa s c omi n g f r o m Callinan Street. The alarm was initiated by an alarm company and was determined to be false. The fire chief and four firefighters responded. May 10, 8:37 PM: A caller said there was a vehi c l e on f i r e on Tweedsmuir Street. Upon arrival, firefighters found a fully involved quad side-by-side in the front yard. It was totally consumed by the fire, and firefighters extinguished it. The on-call officer and 12 firefighters responded. May 15, 11 AM: A city worker called to report that someone was burning their grass on Phelan Avenue. Upon arrival, the fire chief informed the home owner of the bylaw against any burning within city limits and that he could be billed for the call. The homeowner immediately put out the fire. The fire chief responded alone. May 18, 12:52 AM: A caller said there was a fire located between two commercial buildings on Third Avenue. Upon arrival, firefighters found a small fire on the exterior wall of one of the buildings. It was quickly brought under control. Firefighters searched the building for extension fires and the RCMP were called to the scene as the fire was suspicious in nature. The on-call officer and 11 firefighters responded. May 18, 3:50 PM: A caller said there was smoke inside a church on Church Street. Upon arrival, firefighters found the cause of the smoke was burnt ballast in a light fixture. The on-call officer and seven firefighters responded. May 21, 2:38 PM: A caller said there was a bush fire at the end of Hapnot Street. Upon arrival, firefighters found a bush fire that was quickly contained. The RCMP was called in to investigate as this was a suspicious fire. The fire chief and 12 firefighters responded. May 21, 2:55 PM: A caller said there was a car on fire on Flin Flon Highway. Upon arrival, firefighters found a fully involved 2001 Cavalier. The fire was quickly extinguished and the probable cause was from an engine fire. The fire chief and 12 firefighters responded. May 28, 11:13 AM: A caller said a fire alarm was coming from a home on Prince Charles Place. The alarm was initiated by an alarm company and was determined to be false. The fire chief and three firefighters responded. May 30, 2:14 AM: A caller said there was a fire on First Avenue. Upon arrival, firefighters found a sewer box on fire. The fire was contained to the sewer box and extinguished. The probable cause was arson, and RCMP were on scene. The fire chief and 21 firefighters responded. May 31, 12:30 AM: A caller said there was a fire on Hapnot Street. Upon arrival, firefighters found that two mattresses, which had been leaning against a house, were on fire. The fire was extinguished and the exterior wall of the residence was opened up to check for extensions. The front door to the lower suite was forced to gain entry to the residence. The probable cause of was arson. The RCMP were on scene before the arrival of the fire department and are investigating the cause. The fire chief and five firefighters responded.
