Here is the Fire Chief's Report for the month of August, submitted recently to Flin Flon City Council: Incident No. 1 - vehicle arson, Hillside Cemetery, Aug. 1: At 08:50 hours a caller stated that there was a vehicle on fire at the Hillside Cemetery. Upon arrival, the fire department found a fully-involved vehicle belonging to the City. The cause of the fire was determined to be arson. The approximate dollar loss was $30,000. Nine firefighters responded to this call. Incident No. 2 - house fire, Green St., Aug. 1: At 19:32 hours a caller stated that their gas barbecue and the side of their home was on fire. Upon arrival, the fire department found a fire in its early stages, which was quickly extinguished. The approximate dollar loss was $10,000. Ten firefighters responded to this call. Incident No. 3 - false alarm, First Ave., Aug. 5: At 17:10 hours a caller stated that there was a fire on First Ave. Upon arrival the fire department found no fire. The fire chief talked to the individual who called the alarm in and determined that the individual was intoxicated. The individual was warned that he would be fined on the next occurrence. The Fire Chief and ten firefighters responded to this call. Incident No. 4 - Vehicle Fire, Highway 10, Aug. 10: At 20:57 hours a caller stated that there was a vehicle on fire one mile south of Bakers Narrows. Upon arrival the fire chief found a fully-involved half-ton truck. The new compressed air foam system was used, knocking down the fire. Unit #125 arrived on scene five minutes later and used its 500 gallons of water to cool the remaining hot spots. The approximate dollar loss was $5,000. The fire chief and 17 firefighters responded to this call. Incident No. 5 - alarms activated on Boam St., Aug. 14: At 21:57 hours a caller stated that the smoke detectors in the residence had activated and she thought she could smell smoke. Upon arrival no smoke smell was evident and the system was reset. The fire chief and one firefighter responded to this call. Incident No. 6 - alarms activated on Green Street, Aug. 15: At 08:15 hours a call was received at the Main Gate from an auto-dialer on Green St. Upon arrival the officer on call determined that the cause of the alarm was water leaking into the alarm system, which caused a ground fault. The officer attended this call alone. Incident No. 7 - house fire on Channing Dr., Aug. 18: At 17:07 hours a caller stated that there was smoke coming from a Channing Dr. residence. Upon arrival heavy smoke could be seen coming from the residence. The fire was extinguished and was contained to the kitchen area. The rest of the home sustained smoke damage. The cause of the fire was determined to have been electrical in nature. The approximate dollar loss was $50,000. The fire chief and 19 firefighters responded to this call. Incident No. 8 - City landfill, Aug. 24: At 17:10 hours a call was received at the Main Gate from the dump operator. Upon arrival it was determined that the fire was contained to the garbage area. The dump operator was informed to get heavy equipment in and bury the fire. The fire chief and one firefighter responded to this call. Incident No. 9 - false alarm, Canadian Tire, Aug. 25: At 13:10 hours a caller stated that the fire alarm system inside Canadian Tire had been activated. Upon arrival the fire chief found the cause of the alarm was a three-year-old boy who had pulled a pull station. The fire chief and 13 firefighters responded to this call. Incident No. 10- false alarm, Personal Care Home, Aug. 30: At 08:50 hours a call was received at the Main Gate from the auto dialer at the Personal Care Home indicating a fire situation. Upon arrival it was determined to be a false alarm. The fire chief and ten firefighters responded to this call. The number of alarms for the corresponding month of 2003 totalled five, therefore there was an increase of five alarms in August 2004.
