Jonathon Naylor Editor Residents will gather on Ross Lake for a day of skating and camaraderie to help celebrate a community milestone. The first-ever Fire and Ice Family Fun Day, scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 17, will kick off events marking Flin Flon's 80th anniversary. 'It's a great opportunity for people to come out and just socialize and have a fun day,' said Mike Dubreuil, recreation programmer for the City of Flin Flon, which is sponsoring the day along with the Trout Festival. Though some details are still being hammered out, the plan is to have two or three large sections of the southern portion of Ross Lake _ near the Ross Lake Market Garden _ cleared of snow and flooded. There are also plans for a nearby bonfire, with heated tents set up to give participants a place to warm up. Different community partners are expected to come on board. The Flin Flon Bombers, for instance, are tentatively scheduled to participate. Dennis Stringer, a resident who uses a chainsaw to fashion wood carvings, is scheduled to demonstrate his remarkable talents. See 'No...' on pg. 7 Coninued from pg. 1 Hot chocolate and coffee, and possibly some food, will be available. Though there will be no admission fee, the Trout Festival is looking at ways to raise money at the event, including a silver collection. Dubreuil said the intent is not to hold a major winter festival, but to give the community a family-friendly gathering to coincide with the February long weekend. Participants will be invited to bring their own skates. For those who do not own skates, organizers plan to have a selection of skates to lend out. (See the city's full-page Reminder ad this Friday for details on how to donate skates). Dubreuil said the Fire and Ice Family Fun Day may become an annual event, but the focus now is on making the inaugural event as enjoyable as possible. Other events are to be held this year to mark the 80th anniversary since Flin Flon was incorporated. Keep reading The Reminder for details.
