Flin Flon’s letter carriers are fighting to save door-to-door mail delivery.
They joined MP Niki Ashton this week in petitioning for a reversal of Canada Post’s decision to phase out home delivery by 2018.
“I know that from speaking to some seniors, it was a great concern for them and we should try to keep it,” said Miranda Nagy, who has delivered mail in Flin Flon for about 11 years.
Ashton joined letter carriers on a door-to-door petition drive Tuesday and said the response was clear: Flin Flonners overwhelmingly support home delivery.
“The message that I was hearing most often is that Flin Flon has lost enough,” said Ashton. “People in Flin Flon, and people in the North, don’t deserve to lose more. This is a critical service in a community like Flin Flon.
“The importance of getting your mailed delivered, packages delivered, to your doorstep is often essential.”
Two northern Manitoba communities, Flin Flon and Thompson, stand to lose home mail delivery as the money-losing Canada Post revamps its business model.
Ashton plans to present petitions from both communities in the House of Commons this fall. The documents will then go to the minister responsible for Canada Post, Lisa Raitt.
“It’s great to see so many people fighting back and saying, ‘This is important to us,’” said Ashton, an opposition MP.
Flin Flon has eight letter carriers: six full-time and two part-time.
