Attorney General Gord Mackintosh has announced new resources to fight organized crime by creating new initiatives to take on gangs and organized illegal activity, building on the success of existing tools and 54 new police officers funded in Budget 2005. "Manitoba is determined to continue its leadership in building an intelligence-led fight against organized crime and gangs and creating a hostile environment in which to conduct illegal business," Mackintosh said. He announced the initiatives will focus on creating new sets of eyes and ears to gather intelligence on gangs while ensuring there are resources in place to support vigorous investigation and prosecution of those involved in organized crime and gang activity. Provincial laws have shut down more than 90 crack houses, drug dens and prostitution houses. The joint efforts of MB Transportation and Government Services, Winnipeg Police Service and the RCMP were commended as one of the best examples of an integrated effort to combat organized crime in Canada after they were able to seize $28 million in illegal contraband and $2 million in cash in the last year.
