When organizers began their quest for a logo for the upcoming Bust the Winter Blues Festival, they were looking for something colourful and creative. And that's just what they got from 11-year-old Athea Fernandes, who drew a logo depicting a penguin playing a saxophone for her winning submission. "It's our new official logo," said Jason Mandes, one of the organizers. "I dig it." Athea's logo will be featured on posters, pins and advertisements for the festival, which will combine Flin Flon's Sled Dog Races with Creighton's Chilly Willy Winter Festival. Organizers had approached Many Faces Education Centre teacher Graham Garrett to see whether his students were interested in managing a logo contest in the community. The students of his recreation technology course obliged and soon made their way to local schools to promote the contest. Athea's entry was chosen at the best by a group of judges consisting of the festival organizers, and Garrett and his students. For her efforts, the grade 6 student at McIsaac School Ecole McIsaac received a gift certificate for a pizza courtesy of Doe Doe's Pizza. Teaming up to put on the new festival are staff from Flin Flon Parks and Recreation, Creighton Recreation and the Flin Flon Indian-Metis Friendship Centre. The Bust the Winter Blues festival, scheduled for February 13-15, will include popular aspects of both former festivals as well as plenty of new activities for families to enjoy. Those will include a one-day sled dog race on Ross Lake, pancake breakfasts, a snowboarding competition and a flea market. New events will include a MuchMusic dance, a social for adults and other "new and exciting things" that organizers will disclose as the festival approaches. Events will take place in both Flin Flon and Creighton. Anyone wishing to help out with the festival, or who has ideas on how to enhance it, may contact Aimee at 681-7542, Cindy at 688-8254 or Jason at 687-8855.
