Flin Flonners who haul their own garbage to the landfill won't have to dig quite as deep into their wallets. As early as August, city council is poised to eliminate the $25 fee for 'construction' material brought in by vehicles weighing less than one ton. 'What was happening is, people were showing up at the dump with a truckload of garbage and two two-by-fours and they were having to pay the construction fee,' said Coun. Bill Hanson. Speaking at Tuesday's council meeting, Coun. Hanson said the situation 'wasn't really fair.' Council approved first reading of a bylaw amendment to eliminate the construction fee for lighter vehicles. The second and third _ and final _ reading is expected to pass Aug. 6 at the earliest. All other landfill tipping fees remain in effect, with vehicles under one ton paying $10 to drop off most types of garbage. Vehicles weighing between one and five tons pay $50 to drop off a load. Single-axle vehicles over five tons pay $75 and $25 for each additional axle (over two). In each case, a trailer is charged as a second vehicle. Tipping fees do not apply to certain items that can be recycled for profit, such as oils, tires, batteries, most metals and fridges. Coun. Hanson said that when the tipping fees were established in the summer of 2012, council made it clear 'they would be tweaked.'
