2003 February 6 Ð Bruce Reid of Denare Beach was the winner of the Bombers' 'Old Yeller' classic Chevy truck draw held during the second period of the SJHL-MJHL All-star game last Saturday. The truck was valued at $16,000. February 11 Ð The Flin Flon Toastmasters Club, a service club dedicated to helping people improve their communications skills, is celebrating its 25th anniversary. "I think public speaking is a skill that if you don't use it, you lose it," said Harry Hobbs, who has been a member of the group since its inception. February 14 Ð Progress continues to be right on schedule, both time-wise and financially, on one of the most significant projects in the mining history of the local area. The Triple 7 Mine is now about 16 months from going into full production. "I think what Triple 7 has done is it's given us a new lease on life as far as the mining operation is concerned, commented Dale Powell, senior vise-president of corporate affairs for HBMS. February 17 Ð Singing "Give Peace A Chance", and waving anti-war signs, a group of 25 residents gathered on the step of Flin Flon City Hall on Saturday to speak out against potential military action in Iraq. Ð Another Main Street business has voiced its support for the free parking uptown. "It's a good thing and people really like it because they don't have to be in a big hurry to get back to their meters," said Kevin McMunn, manager of Siemens Diamonds. February 19 Main Street's newest addition has been open less than three weeks and already business is booming. The locally-owned Curves weight loss centre, based at 86 Main Street in the former Saturn Video building, has a clientele of about 250 women and continues to grow. Ð Rick Bacon will continue to rid the city of derelict houses this spring as part of his ongoing effort to beautify the community and make it a safer place to live. Bacon, the assistant director of works and operations for the City of Flin Flon, noted that 12 such abandoned eyesores were torn down (some by their owners) last year. "I'm hoping to get as many this year as last," he said. February 24 Ð It's often been said that the volunteer spirit is stronger in Flin Flon than most other communities. At no time was that feeling more apparent than over the weekend, when just over 250 Lions members were in town for the Lions District 5M-13 2003 Mid-Winter Convention. "It's been absolutely unbelievable, the hospitality we have all received in Flin Flon has been monumental, said Bruce Murray, Lions Past International Director, one of several guest speakers at the convention. February 28 Ð A former local radio personality and former resident of Creighton, Rod Nystrom, recently received a gold medal production award in a ceremony held recently in New York City. Rod won the award for his production work with TSN Ð The Sports Network which is based in Toronto.
