What harm will drinking do to my unborn baby? If you drink while you are pregnant, your baby drinks too. Alcohol passes straight from your body into the baby's body. Drinking alcohol while you are pregnant ? any amount of alcohol ? can hurt the brain and the body of your unborn baby. Alcohol can affect a growing baby's brain, organs and body, affecting how it thinks, acts and learns as a child and an adult. The brain damage that is caused when a mother drinks is permanent. There is no way to fix that brain. Drinking during pregnancy can cause serious health problems and disabilities for your baby that will last a lifetime. Babies can also be affected by alcohol if the mother drinks alcohol while breastfeeding. Your baby grows inside you the whole time you are pregnant so drinking anytime and any amount can hurt it.
