Bring in the critters and plug in your cars. The Flin Flon area is under an extreme cold warning - and it's expected to get bonechillingly nasty late tonight.

Extreme cold warnings were called for much of the prairie provinces Tuesday, including areas of Manitoba and Saskatchewan around Flin Flon.

According to the most recent Environment Canada forecast for Flin Flon, temperatures will drop to as cold as minus-37 late Tuesday night, with windchill likely to bring conditions down to the equivalent of minus-48. Frostbite conditions can occur in minutes at those temperatures.

"A high pressure system is moving into the prairies causing clear skies and ushering in cold arctic air... Extreme wind chill values are expected this evening, with the most extreme values occurring near the early morning hours," reads the extreme cold warning issued for the Flin Flon area by Environment Canada Tuesday afternoon.

"Extreme cold puts everyone at risk. Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill. If it's too cold for you to stay outside, it's too cold for your pet to stay outside. Watch for colour changes on fingers and toes, pain, numbness, a tingling sensation, or swelling. If present, move indoors and begin warming. Outdoor workers should take regularly scheduled breaks to warm up."

That cold is currently expected to continue through Wednesday morning - conditions will be sunny and highs in the high minus-20s are expected, but so are light snow and minus-48 degree wind chill Wednesday morning. A slight warming is expected Wednesday afternoon, enough to possibly end the cold warning, but another cold night - expected to be in the minus-35 range - is expected Wednesday night.

The cold is expected to subside by Thursday, when conditions are expected to get back to highs in the low minus-teens.
