Many residents have come to believe that if Wal-Mart and the other big box stores on the outskirts of town hadn't come to Flin Flon, they would have gone to The Pas. But now it appears at least one of those businesses will have a footprint in both communities. Construction on a new Extra Foods store in The Pas could begin as early as this year, with a possible completion date this fall, according to the town's newspaper, the Opasquia Times. Mayor Gary Hopper told the newspaper that the store will be similar to the one in Flin Flon but with one major difference: it will feature a gas bar. The Pas Town Council should know how soon construction will begin within the next month, he told the publication. The new store in The Pas is to be built on green land beside Devon Park, near the Bignell Bridge that stretches over the North Saskatchewan River. It's the same site Canadian Tire considered for a new store several years ago. In the Opasquia Times article, Mayor Hopper made no mention of other businesses ready to set up shop at the site. Meanwhile, Extra Foods spokesperson Lori Stene said the chain is thrilled with the success of its new Flin Flon store, which opened last month. "Flin Flon has been excellent," she said from her Calgary office. "We've been very pleased with the community's response."3/25/2004
