It’s the beginning of a new era for Flin Flon’s community newspaper.
Effective today, The Reminder is a weekly publication, hitting stores and homes each Wednesday. Last week marked our final Friday edition.
“This change is a way to improve coverage of local news and events,” said Reminder publisher Valerie Durnin. “One larger paper has more impact and can reach more people, which is better for our readers and our advertisers.”
Wednesday was chosen as the publication day because it reaches readers in time for them to make decisions for the weekend ahead.
Among the new features of the weekly Reminder are colour photos on select pages every issue and on-the-spot interviews with residents regarding local topics of interest. Find the first of these on page 4 today, answering the question: ‘What would make Flin Flon a better community?’
Regular local features such as Elly on the Arts, Northern Gardening, Now and Then, and Healthy North will continue. Local Angle, a weekly editorial column that launched in 2005, will help anchor the revamped opinion pages.
Breaking news will continue to appear on The Reminder’s website at www.thereminder.ca, ahead of more in-depth print coverage. Readers are also invited to like Flin Flon Reminder on Facebook for updates.
In conjunction with the change, The Reminder is now priced at $1.50. Home delivery will cost $78 a year, down from $104. Digital subscriptions will cost $60 a year, down from $80. Subscribers who have already paid will have their subscriptions extended accordingly.
“We hope that the community will like the change,” said Durnin. “We surveyed our readers last year and several respondents mentioned they would prefer a weekly publication. We will still have an active feature schedule, including our annual tourism guide and service guide. We’re looking forward to a great year, with special coverage of the Homecoming and Canada’s 150th anniversary.”
The Reminder launched as Flin Flon Daily Reminder on Oct. 16, 1946, publishing six days a week. The publication schedule changed to five days a week in 1978, three days a week in 2005 and two days a week
in 2015.
Since its inception, The Reminder has published more than 18,000 editions.
