Explosion at Stittco destroys building, injures one

Homes shaken as firefighters race to scene

An explosion that destroyed a Stittco Energy Ltd. shop Wednesday morning left one person with non-fatal burns, Flin Flon RCMP said, while strewing pieces of the building for metres around.

The explosion happened at about 7:30 am, shaking residents' homes and temporarily knocking out power to many houses and businesses. It levelled the shop on the propane supplier's property near Third Avenue.

Firefighters  on scene made their way through rubble to train their hoses on the fire, which left a thick cloud of smoke visible for blocks away.

Traffic was redirected around the area. Across the street from Stittco, the Gas Bar convenience store was temporarily closed, with building material having landed near the gas pumps.

The explosion was so powerful that one resident thought a vehicle had slammed into his home; another said the force of the explosion was far too strong to be mistaken for the regular morning mine blast.
