Manitobans are living a full year below the national life expectancy rate, a new Statistics Canada report shows. The data shows that a baby born in the province in 2002 could expect to live to be 78.7 years. Only Newfoundland had a lower rate in Canada at 78.3 years. "Nationally, life expectancy has gone up by 1.9 years since 1991. However in Manitoba over the same time period, life expectancy has only increased by 1.1," a health analyst with Statistics Canada told reporters. Diabetes is one of the reasons for Manitoba's lower rate, as deaths in the province related to the disease rose more than two-thirds in 2001-02. A higher infant mortality rate is another factor. British Columbia has the greatest life expectancy rate at 80.6 years.
