Manitobans can expect their electricity bills to keep going up. Manitoba Hydro CEO Scott Thomson said Wednesday that customers are likely to face annual rate hikes of 3.5 per cent for the foreseeable future. 'It's true that these increases are higher than the general inflation rates, and we understand this presents challenges for some of our customers,' he told the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce, as quoted by CBC, 'but we do expect to remain at or near the low end of rates for Canadian utilities, given the announced rate increases across the country.' The news is bound to embolden critics who believe Hydro should focus on supplying affordable electricity to Manitobans rather than exporting power to places like Wisconsin and Ontario.
