Excitement is building over the upcoming Bust the Winter Blues Festival, now just over two weeks away. "It's going to be a great time," said Jason Mandes, program events coordinator for the Friendship Centre and one of the organizers. "Come check it out. It's going to be a good time, there's going to be a tonne of things to do." The festival, which will run from February 11-15, is the combination of Flin Flon's Sled Dog Races and Creighton's Chilly Willy Winter Festival. Mandes said residents can expect their favourite aspects of the festivals to return and compliment new additions. The festival will include a Battle of the Bands competition at the R.H. Channing Auditorium, with local youth bands encouraged to share their talents with the public. Also new is the Bust the Winter Blues Social, which will also take place at the R.H. Channing Auditorium with popular local band High Noon providing the entertainment. The best part of the weekend for many residents is the sled dog races on Ross Lake. Complimenting the races on the frozen lake surface will be friendly competitions such as leg wrestling, wood sawing and a snow man building contest. Of course there will be much, much more. Mandes is pleased that Flin Flon and Creighton have come together to offer one large festival instead of two smaller ones. "Everybody thinks it's a great idea," he said, adding that having separate festivals was an unnecessary duplication of services. Anyone willing to volunteer with the upcoming festival or who would like more information may contact Jason at 687-8855.
