The City of Flin Flon will get some help with its crackdown on municipal ordinances by hiring a by-law enforcement officer. City Council last week approved a motion to diversify the animal control officer's position to include the enforcement of by-laws. The position will also include relief storekeeping duties. The motion stated that the by-law enforcement officer "shall assist the assistant director of works and operations in the enforcement of municipal by-laws, all but not limited to the animal control by-law, maintenance and occupancy by-law, derelict vehicle by-law, and zoning by-law." As well, he or she "shall have primary responsibility for the enforcement of the animal control by-law." The vacant position was advertised in The Reminder last Friday. Over the past two years, the City of Flin Flon has stepped up its enforcement of several by-laws, including those relating to tree branches that overhang onto municipal land as well as advertising signs. At last week's meeting, Councillor Nazir Ahmad stated that the enforcement campaign "has taken some people by surprise" and resulted in some "unhappiness" among the citizens affected. He made a motion, which passed, that the City administration prepare a report on the various provisions of the by-laws and enforcement policies, and make a recommendation to Council for an appropriate public awareness campaign.
