An upcoming event in Flin Flon will help people discover the symptoms and causes of elder abuse.

The first-ever Elder Abuse Prevention Education and Conference will take place Oct. 1 at the Flin Flon Community Hall, starting at 9:30 a.m. Katy Anderson and Doreen Gabler with the Flin Flon seniors’ executive are co-organizers of the event.

“It's to educate people about how to recognize it in friends, recognize it in people themselves, how to find ways to counteract some of the issues that are going on. It includes physical, emotional, mental, financial things, even like phone scams and things like that, that people are dealing with constantly,” said Anderson.

“People maybe know about it, they see it may be happening, but maybe they don't know how to deal with it and what resources they can go to get help. That's what I think is needed.”

The meeting is restricted to people ages 55 and higher. Organizers have told The Reminder that they will have reached their self-imposed maximum of 100 participants. Anderson said the group may hold another meeting for a younger audience if demand exists.

Gabler added, “If it turns out really good, then maybe next year, there could be one for everybody who couldn't attend.”
