Now that the Egg Lake Rehabilitation Centre has closed, the Manitoba government has declared the facility surplus and is trying to sell it. A government spokesman said there has been some interest from the private sector in purchasing the facility, located about 80 kilometres south of Flin Flon. A deal is expected to be completed within the next six weeks. Egg Lake, a minimum security institution outside Cranberry Portage, closed in mid-July because it was underutilized, running at about 60 per cent capacity. Flin Flon MLA Gerard Jennissen said it was his understanding that judges no longer sentence as many low-risk offenders to places like Egg Lake as they once did. Egg Lake had a 36-inmate capacity and employed seven full-time staff who have now been transferred to The Pas.
