The Egg Lake Rehabilitation Centre, a minimum security institution outside of Cranberry Portage, will close in July. Flin Flon MLA Gerard Jennissen said the Manitoba Department of Justice made the decision primarily because the facility is underutilized, running at about 60 per cent capacity. "I guess they're in the position where they have to make decisions, and sometimes they have to make some tough decisions," said Jennissen, adding that he did not have all of the details on the matter. Jennissen said it's his understanding that judges no longer sentence as many low-risk offenders to places like Egg Lake as they once did. Egg Lake, located 27 kilometres south of Cranberry Portage, employs seven full-time staff who will be transferred to The Pas once the facility closes. Egg Lake can hold up to 36 inmates.6/5/04
