Now that the weather is getting warmer and there are signs that maybe spring will come, it reminds me of springtime in Newfoundland. The big thrill for us in spring was the breaking up of the ice on the bay. The giant pans of ice allowed us to go "ice-panning" or "copying" as some called it. Of course, thinking back, not only was it stupid, it was extremely dangerous. But as kids there was no fear of falling in, certainly not of drowning. All we knew was that we had to get out a little further than that kid over there. We would jump from pan to pan as far out as we could, then turn around and jump back. That was crazy! I would ground my kids for life if they ever did something so stupid. Today, I won't walk on the lake in January. Now here is your chance to share your stories of growing up down East. Maybe you have a great memory you would like to share in an upcoming East of Here column. It must be 200 words or less. Please sign your name but it doesn't have to be printed if you choose not to. Send me your great memories at trudyburton4 @hotmail.com Something to Ponder: Fear is the sand in the machinery of life.
